The Rocktopuss

One of the really fun things about my place of work is that every new hire gets a portrait that is hung on our giant family tree wall.  Since my buddy, Dave,  just got hired I volunteered to do his portrait. This piece was inspired by Dave's air guitar persona, The Rocktopuss. I was really happy with how it turned out seeing as how I procrastinated and didn't start actually illustrating until the night before it was due. I think it has a band poster quality to it that really pushes the idea of his musicality even more.

Matthew Hollister

Found some very interesting work from Matthew Hollister. His work has a simplicity and bluntness about it that I really appreciate. Check out his site here.

And Then There's This

I really love the design for the cover of this book, And Then There's This. I think a design style like this could go far in animation....just a thought anyways.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Yet another Threadless submission. This one for the "create your favorite t-shirt contest". I mean seriously? You might as well not even make a theme. I would try to think my way out of tight constraints than have as broad a topic as this. Anyway I decided to not over think this one. I wanted to use the blob brush in Illustrator and sketch directly to the final design. No pre thought, just what my mind thinks of in the moment. In the end it created a pretty cool eye spy design and the more you look at it the more you find. Vote for it here.

Bowling Night

I was recently recruited to a bowling team with some of my friends on Monday night at the Interstate Lanes in Rossford, Ohio.  I'm sure you can picture its beauty already.  Tonight was team picture night and I decided to do it right. You can see all the photos on my flickr, but here are my favorites.

Making of the "Holy Flying Circus" Title Sequence - A Rather Large Phonotrope

Some serious craftsmanship and time went into the making of this piece and it truly shows in the end result.

Danton Diphthong: Episode 1

This is an amazing piece of animatic awesome cartoon crazy times by Alex Varanese. Just watch the video and you'll get what I mean.

In Case of Emergency, Call Thor Part 2

Recently I posted a picture of an emergency exit label that I saw on a train. Needless to say, it inspired me to put my own spin on it. Below is the result. Check it out and vote for it on threadless here.

In Case of Emergency, Call Thor

Social Animals

Karsh\Hagan created Social Animals to help their client, American Crew, make the most of its redesigned social pages. The book outlines timelines, tone of voice, and best practices for interacting on sites like YouTube, Flickr, Twitter and Facebook. I love this book for so many reasons. I love the clean design and the iconography that has grown so recognizable to our society.  I also really enjoy the layout of the book; the first page is a title in large bold letters and the second page dives deeper into the issue using infographics and icons.

Doodle from the Heart

I have been working on an "eye spy" sort of design for Threadless recently and I am approaching it from a new perspective. Normally I would conceptualize an idea, sketch, and finalize in Illustrator. This time I am "stream of consciousness" doodling in hopes that the final piece will be inherently me. I don't see this as lowering the quality as much as just giving the piece a more raw feel. Although the work is still in progress I thought it would be nice to show some samples.

Subway - Campaign Montage

This is a brilliantly executed piece from Curtis Baigent. His style is new and refreshing and I particularly love the section on chopstick use. The way Curtis blends 2D and 3D animation is seamless.

Into the Future

I don't know about any of you but when I was a kid I used to love these cartoons from Tex Avery about what the world will be like in the future.  I think it may be some inspiration for some upcoming work.  If you are an old fan like me get ready to have your nostalgia gland kicked in the balls, and if you haven't seen them I suggest you check them out because they are still great.

The Adventures of Tintin

This video by James Curran is sick...and in a good way. The smooth transitions and the ability to focus on one shape for the entire piece makes this a true masterpiece of animation.

Nike Fresh Air

It's truly interesting to see how an art style is incorporated into a larger piece in this video for Nike Fresh Air by Doubleday & Cartwright.

I Need Nothing - a nearly useless odyssey

Cãoceito is a small label started by three friends who met each other in Fine Arts school where they were studying towards a degree in Communication Design. This recent video they created is a real joy to watch and I think has a really unique little message to it about the relationship of visual and audio.

Battlesnake - The Cheshire Cat

Battlesnake is a 3 piece Free-Rock trio from Melbourne. The Cheshire Cat is an improvised song recorded in a house on Phillip Island one weekend in October. I really dig this video they shot. I am assuming they used a HD GoPro.

The Little People Project

So Slinkachu...Yes that is his/her name...has been creating some amazing photographic work.  It is particularly inspiring to me because I have been trying to do something like this for a while and failing. So, for your viewing pleasure: The Little People Project.

Fox Retro

A recent ad for FOX Italy takes 8-bit animation to a new level. Very fluid movements, squash and stretch, and even some 3D. Created by PUNGA, check out their site here.
