Meet Mr. Toilet

The name itself almost forces you to watch this one. No, it is not some ridiculous cartoon about the misadventures of a crazy loo named Mr. Toilet. Instead it is a very short and informational documentary on businessman-turned-sanitation-superhero Jack Sim and his goal of everyone in the world having access to a toilet.  What I love most about the piece is it's length. I perfect 3 minutes is just enough time for me to not get too bored but to also get a ton of useful information.  Don't believe me, well just watch below to see the SHIT I'm talking about.  Created by Focus Forward Films.

Amy Rodchester

I am really in love with these 3D posters that were designed by Amy Rodchester for the Newcastle Festival of Dance. At first I was simply intrigued by the design and repetition of feet. Maybe I have been looking at the Fairburn System of Visual References too long, but the antique quality of the photographs really catches my eye. What's truly innovative about these posters is their 3D quality. If you look closely you can see that each pair of feet is jutting outward towards the viewer, each at different distances. Not only does this create visual interest, but it also adds unique shadows that one could not achieve working with a flat surface.

Postcards From America

In May 2011, five Magnum photographers – Paolo Pellegrin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Alec Soth, Mikhael Subotzky – and a writer, Ginger Strand, set out from Austin, Texas, in an RV. Two weeks and 1750 miles later, they arrived in Oakland, California.

The resulting limited edition book is a collection of objects – a book, five bumper stickers, a newspaper, two fold-outs, three cards, a poster and five zines, all in a signed and numbered box – that collectively document the experience.

Although this product is a little pricey at 250 clams it is still a wonderful collection of work (and at least you get the autographs of all the artists). Watch the video below to see Alec Soth give you a virtual tour. Also buy the book here. You better act fast because it is only an edition of 500 and the price goes up to 350 on February 1, 2012.

Star Wars Uncut: Director's Cut

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake “Star Wars: A New Hope” into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

Joe Fig

Stopped by the local Toledo Art Museum today and saw the Small Worlds exhibit. Right when I heard about it I knew I was going to love it. My favorite piece came from an artist named Joe Fig. He creates these wonderfully realistic miniature sculptures of artists and their surroundings. These works become three dimensional portraits.  What I loved most about his work is that you can walk around the piece and experience it from several angles.  His work, Who’s Afraid of Barney?, which is a portrait of Barnett Newman, is a great example of this.  From one side the piece is nothing more than a brick building, from another your peering through a window as Barnett is staring out back at you, and from yet another you see the interior of Barnett's apartment; tidy with a few paintings leaning against the wall. At each angle I was feeling something different about the piece and I think what makes this possible is the sheer quality of Fig's work. The realism allows me to believe that I truly am watching this moment, and I can experience it however I want. It speaks to the true voyeur in all of us.
